New Classes Commence This January

Now we’ve settled into our new home at The Cornstore Creative Hub, Draperstown; we’ve put together our new programme of classes and workshops to see us in to 2014.

*You will see that a number of workshops have deadlines, this is due to high demand for courses in the past and as such is a guideline. If you are interested in a workshop and the deadline has passed, please still contact us and we will endeavour to facilitate you.

Rural Youth Entrepreneurship Programme – Commencing January 18th
Aged 16-30 and interested in starting your own business but don’t know where to start? On January 18th, Glasgowbury will host a free interactive workshop in Rural Youth Entrepreneurship, a programme facilitated by the Rural Development Council and Advantage. Designed to raise awareness of self-employment, the programme supports 16-30 year olds to identify business ideas and consider if self-employment could work for them.

The initiative supports Glasgowbury’s creative mentoring scheme; an ongoing programme of support to young, local creatives.

Glasgowbury ‘Hot Desks’ – Commencing January 18th
From January, Glasgowbury will provide bookable ‘Hot Desks’ at the Cornstore Creative Hub which will give access to specialist multi-media equipment and advice and support to young creatives and new businesses.

Rhythm ‘n’ Blues Workshops Return – 15-16th January
Workshops offering an introduction to acoustic guitar and percussion (Samba Band and Drum Circle).

The workshops will take place in Glasgowbury’s new creative hub, The Cornstore, Draperstown, for young people aged 11 – 25yrs from 15-16th January

£1 per session. Instruments can be supplied.

BT Connected Communities Returns on January 21st

After last year’s massively successful introduction, BT Connected Communities returns this January. Initially only a six week course, the programme became a yearlong series of courses due to phenomenal demand. The programme is aimed at providing on the ground access to computers and IT support so that everyone has the chance to get online.

Under BT’s drive to get people tech savvy, Glasgowbury will become a rural creative hub for the Connected Communities project, offering tuition in everything from the basics of getting started online to using the web to meet your needs.

“Simply put, we believe everyone should be connected,” said a spokesperson for BT. “With BT Connected Communities we’ll show how easy it is to go online and experience the World Wide Web – and how it can help make your life better.”

The programme will be tailored to the needs of the participants so registration is essential. Topics include: Using your computer for photos, protecting your computer, Internet safety with children, online banking amongst many others.

Classes commence on January 21st and will run for 6 weeks

It is Glasgowbury’s aim to expand the initiative to eventually offer creative classes in various software and computer development.

Rural Key Project

The Rural Key Music Project is a dynamic initiative, based in Draperstown which gives young musicians a step up the musical ladder with intensive workshops covering all aspects of the music industry.

As part of The Rural Key Music Project, we are offering Guitar & Drums tuition throughout the year for people aged 8-18 which run on Wednesdays & Saturdays. Beginners and intermediates welcome.

Six Pack Club
The Six Pack Club is a guitar tutoring club for adults of all abilities. The club takes place every Wednesday from 5pm in our new creative hub, The Cornstore, Draperstown. Lessons are £6 and last for half an hour.

Paddy Glasgow Nominated For ‘Promoter Of The Year’

Glasgowbury founder Paddy Glasgow has been nominated as ‘Promoter Of The Year’ at the UK Festival Awards. The nomination follows the festival’s short-listing in the ‘Best Small Festival’ category.

Upon hearing the news, Paddy Glasgow said: “Hearing that Glasgowbury had been shortlisted in the ‘Best Small Festival’ at the awards was great news for us, to hear that I have been shortlisted in the ‘Promoter Of The Year’ category is frankly unreal!

For a small, not-for-profit business with charitable status based in rural mid-Ulster to be in the same category as some of the biggest UK and European promotions companies is a real shock. We have spent thirteen years promoting new music here and now we are in the same category as people who promote internationally renowned artists, it’s fantastic.  In addition, the fact that we are the only Northern Ireland representation at the UK Festival Awards speaks volumes for the hard work done over the years by all in the Small But Massive team.”

Glasgowbury Picnic At CultureTECH Festival, Derry 

Last month, Glasgowbury had it’s first live event since the festival at CultureTECH Festival, Derry. The concept was a scaled-down version of the festival at the city’s Guildhall Square, and we went for it!

Festival acts The Greased Palm, Silhouette, Shay Whaylan, Ed Zealous, The Clameens, and The Woodburning Savages all played on the main stage to a packed square with as much fervour as they had up the mountain. In addition, BM Promotions were in attendance doing kids activities and the Samba band kept the festival feeling alive.

Paddy Glasgow Attends Opening Of Julien Frier’s ‘Rhythm And Hues’ Exhibition In Derry

North Coast artist Julien Friers and father of Rory and Ewen Friers [And So I Watch You From Afar and Axis Of respectively] has done a series of portraits of musical icons from across Ireland.

The exhibition was launched in Derry’s London Street Gallery on September 27th

The exhibition includes 16 portraits of famous faces which include amongst others: Henry McCullough, Bronagh Gallagher, Dave Fanning, Gay McIntyre, and of course, Paddy Glasgow.

Rhythm ‘N’ Blues Workshops

To increase opportunities and access to music in rural areas, Glasgowbury is offering subsidised introductory workshops in guitar and Samba drumming for people aged 11-25. The project which commenced in September has already proved very popular.

There are still a small number of slots available for both guitar and Samba drumming workshops available.

Resonate Project Collaboration In Christie Hennessy Song Competition Final

A song collaboration between Glasgowbury staple Paddy Nash and Rural Key participant Gemma Bradley has made it to the final of the Christie Hennessy Song Competition. The song was written as part of Resonate, a collaborative music project in which two acts came together to write and record a song within a 12 hour window at Blast Furnace Studios, Derry. The project also saw festival acts The Greased Palm partner with Orchid Collective and Axis Of with More Than Conquerors respectively.

The final takes place on October 19th in Tralee, Co. Kerry. We wish the pair every success at the awards.

Glasgowbury bids farewell to Eagle’s Rock

After thirteen years and countless performances from the best in homegrown musical talent, we bid farewell to our annual home at Eagle’s Rock at the weekend in truly unforgettable fashion. Amongst many other acts on the bill, headliners And So I Watch You From Afar, The Japanese Popstars and The Answer delivered storming performances, the latter act wrapping up our annual showcase’s final year on the main stage late on Saturday night.

Arguably our most exhilarating showcase to date – expanding to a two-day event for the first time in Glasgowbury history – the event marked our ‘Small but Massive’ transition into new territories after over a decade providing an unparalleled platform for up-and-coming and established artists throughout the country. Earlier this month it was announced that we are set to relocate to an expanded creative hub in Draperstown’s Cornstore, where the continued promotion of homegrown talent and expansion of new educational and creative enterprises will thrive.

With festival organiser Paddy Glasgow asking festival-goers “to look out for a Small but Massive stage near you” on the main stage following the Answer’s set on Saturday night, the future of Glasgowbury is very much in the process of redeveloping, rather than ending. New challenges lie ahead as well as a wider and more varied programme of arts and community development that will continue to provide year-long tuition programmes and performance opportunities. We will strive to foster local talent while developing new audiences for the arts.

To the innumerable cast of volunteers, crew, artists and all the festival-goers involved in positively ensuring that the festival’s final send off will live long in the memory, we would like to express our deepest gratitude and thanks. The next stage in Glasgowbury’s forward-thinking regeneration has only just begun.

Glasgowbury acts collaborate for Resonate project

Six of the acts playing the final ever Glasgowbury festival this weekend have teamed up for three unique collaborations as part of the Nerve Centre’s Resonate project.

With the aim of getting together and writing a new song (the more musically diverse, the better), North Coast three-piece Axis Of and Belfast quartet More Than Conquerors, Paddy Nash and Gemma Bradley and The Greased Palm and Dublin’s Orchid Collective wrote and recorded their songs at Derry’s Blast Furnace recording studio.

Taking place throughout 2013, Resonate is an ambitious recording initiative which hopes to capture the musical talent, energy and spirit of Derry during its tenure as City of Culture by providing a range of recording opportunities, such as locally based professional facilities and roving, mobile ‘pop-up’ recording studios.

Festival set for final send-off at Eagle’s Rock, Draperstown

On the eve of the thirteenth Glasgowbury festival, the organisers behind Northern Ireland’s premiere celebration of homegrown musical talent have announced that this year’s showcase will be the final full-scale event at its home at Eagle’s Rock, Draperstown. Having started back in 2000, the festival and charitable social enterprise has spearheaded Northern Ireland’s live music culture whilst working closely with various local groups and enterprises to bring the arts to the heart of rural communities. Progressing to the next stage of its forward-thinking development, the organisation aims to conquer exciting new territories and develop new audiences.

With “Small but Massive” very much at the heart of the mid-Ulster organisation’s mantra, the announcement marks Glasgowbury’s relocation to an expanded creative hub in Draperstown’s Cornstore, where the continued promotion of local talent and expansion of new educational and creative enterprises will thrive.
