Duke Special heads up local Haiti fundraiser

In response to the Haiti earthquake disaster, Glasgowbury and Duke Special have teamed up for a one-off special gig at the Cellar Bar on Friday 5th February.

Feeling a need to get involved, the country’s most vibrant entertainer will take to the Draperstown stage in a bid to raise some serious cash for the disaster stricken country.

The enigmatic performer, who headlined the Small But Massive main stage at Glasgowbury 2007, is eager to add an intimate Glasgowbury associated date to his repertoire.

Asked about his desire to help the people of Haiti, Peter said: “There’s no way you can’t do something, it’s so horrendous. I felt compelled to do it, it was a natural instinct.

“And it’s great to be getting up to the Cellar Bar for the first time and it’s ages since I’ve gigged here so I’m really looking forward to it,” said Peter.

“And there’s a really great mixture of acts on the night so I’m really excited.”

All proceeds from this weekend’s event will go the charities supporting Haiti.

Support on the night will come from Derry’s newest electro two piece The Wonder Villains and Mid-Ulster’s own Silhouette.

The night will operate strictly on a first come, first served basis and entry is set at £10.

Awarded to a selected young European music photographer each year, Graham’s acclaimed work has wowed the judges this time round.

One of those photographs included in the exhibition was shot post Glasgowbury 2006 when a few selected people, including rockers mojoFURY, found time to wind down in the Cellar Bar.

Graham’s work and that of nine other nominees are currently being exhibited in the Photogallery Noorderlicht (Groningen, The Netherlands) until the 28th of February 2010, after which the show will travel to London.

Merry Christmas from all at Glasgowbury

 happy

Well, we’re coming to the end of an incredible year for music in Northern Ireland, the bands and artists who made it so special and for Glasgowbury.

The annual Small But Massive festival enjoyed one of its most special years yet – with a fantastic day of music, vibrant colour and good vibes all experienced by a sell out capacity crowd.

And with the tenth anniversary of the festival approaching next year, we’re already putting plans in place which will continue the festival’s grassroots ethos while continually providing a platform for the best new and exciting music culture.

Earlier in the year, Glasgowbury also secured the rights to bring the IMRO showcase to a rural and local stage and the venue was packed out – testament to the strength of the music scene.

Meanwhile the Group’s Rural Key Music Project was recognised by the Carnegie UK Trust as Northern Ireland’s ‘Rural Spark’, picking up an award at the iconic Eden Project in Cornwall.

And last month the Group were delighted to hear that we picked up SIX nominations for this year’s Irish Festival Awards – after coming away with two awards last year.

So we’re ending the year on a high – but we’re not resting on our laurels.

Expect to hear some exciting announcements early in 2010 regarding plans for the tenth annual Glasgowbury Music Festival.

And we hope that you, the people who have stuck with Glasgowbury from the start, those who joined the ship at a later stage or those who have simply followed the Group’s many activities throughout the year; can continue to support us and keep us energised throughout 2010 as we prepare for yet another fun-filled weekend of entertainment.

In the meantime, we wish all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

From all the Glasgowbury Team.

Skruff require new bassist

All interested parties should contact the band through their myspace and other social networking sites.

Vote for us in the Irish Festival Awards 2009

For the second year running, Glasgowbury has been nominated in several categories at the Irish Festival Awards.

Last year Glasgowbury picked up the Best Service Award and Family Festival Award, but this year wants to go one better.

After the sell-out success of Glasgowbury 2009, the festival has been nominated in six categories including:

  • Best Small Festival
  • Best Line-Up
  • Best Service
  • Best Toilets
  • Best Family Festival
  • Social Responsibility

So now we need you, the people who make Glasgowbury so special, to vote for us and help us on the road to victory.

Festival Organiser Paddy Glasgow said Glasgowbury’s nominations were testament to the success of the acts and the people who make Glasgowbury so special every year.

“It’s the second year in a row that we’ve been nominated in the Irish Festival Awards and we’re all very proud that Glasgowbury is being recognised on a national scale,” he said.

“It’s because of the people who have stuck with Glasgowbury over the last ten years that the festival continues to go from strength to strength.

“Winning another award from the Irish Festival Awards would be the icing on the cake of a successful year for Glasgowbury so far.

“It’s a great achievement to still be here after 10 years and the group has diversified in many ways over that time.

“With the tenth anniversary of the festival approaching in 2010 plans are already in motion to make it another magical, colourful and fun packed musical extravaganza.

“For now, we’d really appreciate it if the supporters of Glasgowbury could take the time out to vote for us in the Irish Festival Awards and help us be recognised as one of Ireland’s leading music festivals.”

For Folk’s sake

Our good friends at Foyle Folk Festival have just announced plans for this year’s proceedings uniting a truck load of the country’s finest folking and non-folking performers for the annual Derry blow-out.

Re-locating to Cafe Del Mondo at Guildhall Square, the festival will spread itself across two days and display 20 acts from right across the Emerald Isle on August 22 and 23.

Keith Harkin, Little Hooks, Paddy Nash, Ten Gallon Hat, The Mighty Stef and Balkan Alien Sound are just some of the varied acts which highlight the diversity of the annual festival.

The festival is being organised by stalwart musical maestro Philip Wallace (Ard Ri, Here Comes The Landed Gentry), who is excited about bringing the cream of the folk crop together for the weekend long event.

Tickets for the event are priced at a very reasonable £10 per day or £16 for a weekend ticket and are available from Cafe Del Mondo in Derry or you can pay at the door on the day (capacity permitting).
