1 year since our move to the Cornstore!

It’s been 1 year since our move to the Cornstore! Time flies! Here’s a wee update and invite to navigate yourself around the website to keep up date with all things ‘smallbutMASSIVE!’.

2013 marked Glasgowbury’s ‘Small But Massive’ transition into new territories after over a decade providing an unparalled platform for up and coming and established artists throughout the country. In November 2013 we relocated to a landmark heritage building in Draperstown, The Cornstore , where the continued development of homegrown talent and expansion of new educational, creative and community enterprises are thriving. This is something we have been working towards since 2004 so it is great to finally to have a permanent building where we have the opportunity to grow and deliver a broader and more consistent programme of events.

It has been a challenging year but we are making strong progress and are now able to announce a more varied programme of arts and creative and community development that will continue to foster local talent and encourage participation in the arts at a local level.

We are still transcending into this new phase of work and development of a new website and fundraising activities are ongoing. There is still a lot of work to be done both to the building and finding the resources to keep the programmes going. To facilitate this Glasgowbury will be embarking on a fundraising campaign and strengthening our infrastructure via board development and volunteer/work experience opportunities.

While the creative hub is Draperstown based we aspire to offer the services to all those with creative inklings from throughout the district. Having a limited marketing budget we are relying on the Power of the People to spread the word, share our facebook statuses and tell people about our work – Changing Lives, Strengthening Communities and Nurturing Talent. Fundraising –
Glasgowbury is a registered charity and donations are welcome towards ongoing programmes in Community Arts and Creative Industries Development. We are currently developing a sustainability plan which will include fundraising appeals and initiatives. A key priority is to further diversify our sources of income, to enable us to invest in more projects and people. Further information on how you can support the ‘smallbutMASSIVE!’ vision to follow soon!

We have obtained our entertainments license for the Cornstore. Before we can open to the public though there are certain things that have to be done to the building so bear with us while all that is being put in place and we look forward to bringing you quality entertainment in ‘The Loft’!

Paddy Wins ‘Promoter Of The Year’ Award

Small Man Wins Massive At UK Festival Awards

Christmas came early at Glasgowbury with festival founder Paddy Glasgow winning the ‘Promoter Of The Year’ Award at this year’s UK Festival Awards. The announcement was made at the UK Festival Awards ceremony at The Roundhouse, London on December 2nd   that was presented by Phil Jupitus [BBC Radio 2, Never Mind The Buzzcocks].

Reflecting on the award, Paddy Glasgow said: “It’s a great achievement for a pair of wellies to go over to London town and lift the award. On a serious note, it’s fantastic to be awarded such an accolade, particularly knowing that it has been chosen by your peers within the festival and events industry. I’m looking forward to our next venture that is Glasgowbury’s Cornstore Creative Hub in Draperstown in which we will continue to work with many creative individuals for many years to come. Look out for Small But MASSIVE, we may appear near you!”

The award, chosen by the UK Festival Awards panel and industry professionals saw Paddy in the last 8 from a list of 200 others. Other nominees included:

  • Count of Ten (Y Not, Truck, Brownstock, Tramlines)
  • Creamfields
  • Isle of Wight Festival team
  • Spring Music (Bearded Theory)
  • Rob Da Bank
  • Zoo Project Festival team

GLASGOWBURY’S ‘smallbutMASSIVE’ SUMMER SESSIONS

From 15th – 18th July Glasgowbury is running workshops for kids aged 8 – 18yrs in all things musical to complement the ongoing ‘Rural Key’ professional tuition programme that develops musicians throughout the year in the Creative Hub in Draperstown.

The ‘smallbutMASSIVE’ summer sessions are for young musicians looking to develop their technique, their confidence as live performers or simply just to have fun. So if you’re a guitarist, singer, songwriter, bassist, drummer, DJ or aspiring producer this is the place for you! There will be specific music workshops tailored for the complete beginner.

In addition, to introduce you to other programmes available at Glasgowbury’s Creative Hub there will be workshops in dance, digital music making, comic making, film making and theatre. The ‘smallbutMASSIVE’ Samba Band is also recruiting new members and there will be an opportunity to attend a session to see if this energising and stimulating musical activity is for you!

A highlight of the summer programme will be a performance opportunity for participants at the Creative Hub’s first all ages G Session headlined by, local band and Rural Key alumni, The Wood Burning Savages fresh from their appearance on the Radio 1 Introducing Stage at the mighty Glastonbury Festival in Somerset.

Glasgowbury are fortunate to have a great network of friends and colleagues who are excellent musicians and tutors. They all have a great deal of experience and have spent many years studying and honing their art as performers, writers, technicians and masters of their chosen instrument. Tutors for this programme include local songstress Shauna Tohill of ‘Silhouette’, The Wood Burning Savages, Paddy and Liam from Paddy Nash and the Happy Enchiladas.

A number of workshops are free and others will have a nominal charge. Check online for full programme details.

Friday 18th July £5 10am – 4pm 12 – 18yrs Band Development Workshop – Participants will get the opportunity to form a band and rehearse pre selected songs or own original pieces and develop stage presence.
5pm – 7pm Rehearsals/soundcheck– Performers will get the chance to rehearse and soundcheck for the evening gig. Music production participants will assist with the stage set up and soundcheck.
7pm – 9pm G Session – all ages gig featuring some participants and headlined by The Wood Burning Savages

Cornstore Creative Hub

Finally we have moved into our new centre based in one of oldest buildings in our area. The Cornstore was one of the first main builds in Draperstown and now it has a fresh beginning as a Creative Hub where we continue with our ongoing creative projects and are currently developing new and exciting strands to all that is SmallButMassive.

In due course we will be updating our website with new features and information about upcoming projects and developments. Feel free to get in touch with us at our new home in the Cornstore.

Glasgowbury Tutor Wins Songwriting Competition

Draperstown’s Gemma Bradley wins ‘Best Youth/Under 18’ act category at Resonate Project

 

The Resonate Project was set up in 2013 to document local music through Derry’s City of Culture year. Amongst the winners was 17-year-old Gemma Bradley, from Draperstown, winner of the ‘Best Youth/Under 18’ act. Her self-penned song ‘Wicker Men’, inspired by the cult film, wowed judges in the underage category. The live video itself was recorded at Glasgowbury’s new creative Hub, The Cornstore by local media company BScreen Creative Media based within the centre.

The voting was made up of public voting and judges within the arts sector. Gemma is an alumni of Glasgowbury’s Rural Key Project and now teaches guitar to our under 18’s.

Earlier this year, her collaboration with local artist Derry artist Paddy Nash saw her reach the final of the IMRO Christy Hennessy Song contest in Tralee.

‘The Resonate project has been great in providing the inspiration and opportunity for young musicians, said Bradley. ‘I feel I have grown as a performer throughout the City of Culture year. And it has provided tremendous role models like SOAK, who is only year older than me and has already achieved so much.’

Gemma got involved with Resonate when Glasgowbury was approached to put forward a number of acts playing at 2013’s festival to collaborate with each other.

Culture Minister Congratulates Paddy On Award Win

Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has congratulated Paddy Glasgow on winning the ‘Promoter of the Year’ category at the UK Festival Awards.

Paddy won the award at a ceremony in the Roundhouse in London on Monday evening.

The Minister said: “I want to congratulate Paddy on winning this award. This is a significant remarkable achievement given that the Glasgowbury boss was up against such promoter’s as AEG Live, Creamfields, the Isle of Wight festival team and Rob Da Bank.”

“Glasgowbury was first launched in the hinterlands of Ballinascreen in the Sperrins in the year 2000 and has grown in popularity ever since and in 2013, for the first time ever the festival was over a two day period. In support of the City of Culture, Glasgowbury also teamed up with a Derry-based company CultureTECH to bring a technology inspired tent to the festival.”

“Once again, congratulations to Paddy and the whole team at Glasgowbury.”

Small But Massive Event Services is a new innovative and enterprising business wing incorporated under the Glasgowbury umbrella.

As a rural based social enterprise sustaining year round activities such as the award winning Glasgowbury Music Festival, Rural Key Music Project, and Rhythm And Blues workshops; Small But Massive fits in to a family of activities and initiatives which aim to, among other things, boost and improve the creative industries in NI.

  • music, live sound and dance workshops and other outreach services;
