BBC Radio One return to Glasgowbury

Rory McConnell and his BBC Radio One Introducing NI team will return to Glasgowbury this year in association with the Small But Massive Main Stage.

After the success of last year’s involvement when Rory and his Radio One team recorded the entire main stage programme, their return comes at a time when the chosen acts will help Glasgowbury celebrate 10 years at the heart of new music.

Radio One’s commitment has helped Glasgowbury and its unsigned acts become more recognised on an international scale, promoting the best in new and emerging music.

“Since the show became part of the BBC Introducing strand our focus changed completely to exclusively N.Irish and Irish unsigned and under the radar artists, getting involved with Glasgowbury just made so much sense,” said Introducing presenter Rory McConnell.

“As before where priorities with festival organisers might not always be about the music, it was refreshing to get involved with a group of people who had one thing on their mind: showcasing the amazing music made on this island and celebrating it in front of as many people as possible.”

Fighting With Wire will headline the Small But Massive stage after ten years of festival involvement, propelling both themselves and the event into a new era.

“It’s a big year ahead for Fighting With Wire. There’s a lot of people calling on them to stand up and be considered a world class act where they’ll be expected to regularly stand on stages the size of the Glasgowbury main stage.

“So the night of the 24th will reassure those people, and also be a very proud moment for Paddy and myself who have known Cahir from the beginning.”

Looking ahead to this year’s event, Rory is keen that this year’s acts use the platform wisely.

“I see last year as the showcase of N.Irish and Irish talent to the world, and this year now we’ve got peoples attention it’ll be important to make the most of it.

“People know there’s an amazing scene here now, so Glasgowbury 2010 is a chance for bands to act upon it and make the most of peoples ear while we’ve got it. If you’re a band lucky enough to play the festival in 2010 then invite as many people as you possibly can that are in a position to help your career, over to see you.

“Paddy should be inundated by all the bands playing asking for guestlist for all the industry folk coming to see you. Glasgowbury’s your stage, use it wisely.

“I think the way things are going this could be the last Glasgowbury as we know it, so the festival itself could be one to keep an eye on.

“It’s like a bubbling pot that’s about to boil over, I don’t think it’ll be able to stay contained much longer.”

In Case Of Fire set for May G Session

After tearing strips from the main stage at last year’s Glasgowbury Music Festival, In Case Of Fire will return to the group to headline the May G Session.

Slots at Reading and Leeds and Glastonbury among others, secured their alternative rock following and they now look towards the future and album number two.

The young three piece will return to the G Sessions on May 22nd ready to unleash a host of new material from their second outing, looking for feedback from their local fans.

Support will come from A Plastic Rose and Axis Of.

Boogie Buddies dance project launches

Boogie Buddies, a new dance initiative from the award winning Glasgowbury Music Group, will launch in Mid-Ulster in April.

Organised in partnership with Derry based Echo Echo Dance Theatre Company, the course will provide an introduction to dance and alternative dance structures for both young girls and boys.

As NI’s leading contemporary dance company, Echo Echo will organise a programme of activity that focuses on building self-confidence and body awareness as well as nurturing their imaginations and creativity.

The groups will play movement games, learn and follow choreography, improvise and create their own dance sequences.

All classes include warming up and cooling down, the famous Echo Echo circle dance and learning about your body and how it moves.

Sessions will be split into two age categories and will take place on Wednesdays.

Classes for those aged 8-11 (Primary School) will operate from 3.30pm to 4.30pm and for those aged 12-18 (Secondary School) will take place from 5pm to 6pm.

For more information and to register, contact Glasgowbury on 028 796 28428 or call into their office in Draperstown.

The Boogie Buddies Programme has been funded through DARD’s Rural Challenge Programme.

Full line-up revealed for IMRO showcase

Glasgowbury have secured the IMRO Showcase for a second year running giving five local acts a chance to fight it out for a place at the 2010 final.

In association with the G Sessions, Glasgowbury were the first group to take the annual showcase out of the city last year and have confirmed another monster line-up for this year’s event.

The date and venue had previously been announced (Cellar Bar, Draperstown on Saturday 17th April) and now the five lucky golden ticket winners are out.

In 2009 the event was up for grabs to Here Comes The Landed Gentry, We Are Resistance, Furlo and Skruff .

In 2010 it will be up to Building Pictures, Silhouette, Pretty Child Backfire, The Q and LaFaro to lead the charge for local talent.

In securing the showcase for the second year running, Paddy Glasgow said it was an honour to bring IMRO into the local community to sample a selection of the country’s finest musicians.

Doors for the event will open at 8pm and admission is £5.
